Age 14, at home, QTH Williamstown, Mass. on the Vermont border. In the background is Pine
Cobble Mountain in Pownal, Vermont where you could find me on top, on a
nice day. I operated mostly 40 and 75 meter AM Phone and low band rig consisted of a Hallicrafters S-85
Receiver with a HeathKit QF-1, Q Multiplier. If was quite difficult
getting an answer to my CQ's when starting, with my general, as my voice
hadn't changed. Later in 1958 a
Hallicrafters SX-101 MK3A was added. Transmitter was a Heath DX-35, a 6146
RF final, plate modulated with a public address amplifier,
using push pull 6L6's, with a power xfmr used as a modulation xfmr,
for AM phone, plate modulation. Later in 1958 a Benton Harbor Kilowatt was added,
the famous Heath Kit DX-100, with a pair of 6146 RF finals. The Antenna was a Ameco 1KW 80
meter folded dipole fed with Heath kit balun coils at bottom
of feed point and a coax fed 40 meter dipole. As I do things
backwards ( getting on HF phone before VHF phone) Late in 1958 6
Meter VHF was added starting with the famous 6 meter Heath lunchbox, and a
2 element Conical TV antenna for the local North Adams, Hoosac Valley
Radio Club, net, migrating to a Ameco 6 meter Nuvistor converter and a
homebrew 6 meter 829B, plate modulated with a pair of push pull 6146's which also
modulated the DX-100 and a 6 element Telerex beam with a 24 foot boom. The
newspaper route quickly became about 10 times larger to buy half the
fancier gear, with the parents kicking in the other half. Click here for John's
