Backing up Windows ME

When you start your computer successfully, the Windows Registry Checker tool (Scanreg.exe) creates a backup copy of system files and registry configuration information (including user account information, protocol bindings, software program settings, and user preferences) once daily. Files that Windows Registry Checker backs up include System.dat, User.dat, System.ini, and Win.ini. This article describes this Windows Registry Checker tool. For more info go    <<<here>>>.

To  Customize the Registry Checker Tool go   <<<here>>>.    I like to allow more than five backup copies.

To Test the Windows Registry Checker:

Boot your computer with your ME emergency boot, floppy disk and at prompt select " Minimal Boot " at the bottom.

1. Then at the A: command prompt, type:

scanreg /restore               ( Yes: there is a space between the g and / )

2. Press ENTER.

Note : Scanreg may not be available if Windows ME has not been successfully installed on your computer.

You should see up to five back up copies, with dates available. If your computer couldn't boot you would select the newest one, when your computer last worked and run it. Because Scanreg.exe will automaticly delete a good back up file, that you may want some day, I recommend that when you are back in Windows later You should copy any files to floppy or somewhere else on your hard drive. These files are located in C:\windows\SYSBCKUP   and  the first one would be named  rb000.cab  .   Note the dates and save the newest ones when things were last acting perfectly.

Before September 8   2001,  if running Windows ME, download this MS Fix or this restore may not work properly, <<<here>>> .
