Computer " Buying the Best Parts " Memory (RAM) " Page
One of the best ways to speed up any computer is to add memory. All the Windows NT flavors, up to the current Windows XP ( NT6 ) run each program in a separate memory sector, requiring more memory for all the programs to open and run at good speed at the same time. Windows ME, although it cannot manage memory as well, also improves with more RAM. To supplement RAM memory, Operating Systems allocate a reserved space on the hard disk drive called a paging file or virtual memory, which although very slow, still allows you to open programs slowly, instead of not at all. Its quite exciting to add more RAM memory and see the speed increase when opening and running several programs at once. Consult your Mother Board manual for the type of memory you are using. Having a total of 1 or 1.5 Gigabytes is not wasteful at all.
