When installing, don't treat your password laxly, you may want to quickly repair something occasionally . Such as your boot.ini file which boots XP.  Microsoft allows command line repair of this boot function with a new " BOOTCFG " app.     CNET ASIA     Microsoft Support  You may study from desktop by clicking Start, Help and Support, Use Tools, Command Line Reference.

For some simple troubleshooting from XP desktop go to  Start, Run   and  type  msconfig.

When installing XP on a hard drive connected to a very recent IDE Controller chip or card. Look for prompt at immediate beginning located at bottom  left and press " F6 " to add the latest controller card driver from a floppy, which has an " txtsetup.oem  " initiate and XP driver folder on it a few minutes later. If booting from a SCSI DVD or CD ROM you will have to make and use the 6 boot  Floppy disks.  Having a ATAPI IDE DVD or CD ROM Reader is a lot easier.

Changing Motherboard ??

Before you swap out the current motherboard go to device manager and select the IDE ATA/ATAPI Controller and select your current storage controller.  Right click, select update driver and select install from a list or specific location.  Click don't search I will choose the driver to install and select the standard dual channel IDE controller.

This will prevent the inaccessible boot device blue screen.  I have done this multiple times on different platforms with no problems.

Also I found that booting the first time with the new motherboard is best done in the Safe mode where XP will install the drivers it needs and at the same time you can install the new motherboard drivers from its CD.

This saved me doing a repair or a reinstall of XP. My whole system came right up and worked great and very stable.

How to Set up and Use Automated System Recovery in Windows XP  For my computer I select the Automated System Repair Wizard in Backup  and use a separate old slow 5 gig ATA-33 Hard Drive installed in my computer and then at at the end of ASR I insert a 1.44 Mb floppy for recovery start-up.
